Howick is one of Auckland's older settlements, and it's right on the water. Homes around Cockle Bay, Mellons Bay and Bucklands Beach get sea air and wind off the Tāmaki Strait, and many sections have big pōhutukawa or other mature trees. That's good for shade and views, but not so good for gutters and paintwork.
What the coast does to a house
Salt spray leaves a dull film on windows, aluminium joinery and painted surfaces. Left alone, it can speed up corrosion on metal and make paint chalky. A regular house wash rinses it off. On the seaward side, that usually means washing more often than you would inland.
Trees cause the other problem. Pōhutukawa drop leaves, stamens and seed heads, and other big trees drop plenty too, so gutters fill and the roof stays damp. That's when moss gets going. We'll clear the gutters and can either clean or treat the roof.
Houses in Howick
Howick has a real mix: older weatherboard homes near the village, lots of 60s and 70s brick and timber on the hills, and bigger plaster homes from later decades with sea views. Painted timber and plaster get a soft wash. Brick, concrete and paving can take more pressure. We work that out house by house.
Clifftop and sloping sections often have big timber decks and stairs that go green and slippery. A deck wash is a good idea before you oil it in spring. Steep driveways are worth cleaning for the grip alone.
Howick FAQ
How often should a seaside house be washed? Homes right on the coast usually look better with a wash every year, and the side facing the sea sometimes needs it more often. Further back from the water, every one to two years is usually enough.
