Not every mossy roof needs a full wash. If the growth is light to medium and you're not in a hurry, a roof treatment does the job for less. We spray it on, and the weather does the rest.
How it works
- Check the roof and how much growth is on it.
- Protect the garden below.
- Spray a salt-based treatment over the affected areas.
- Leave it. Over 4 to 6 weeks the moss and lichen die, roots and all.
- The weather clears it. Over the next 8 to 12 months, rain and wind wash the dead growth away.

How does roof treatment work?
We spray the roof with a salt-based treatment and leave it there. Over the next 4 to 6 weeks it soaks in and kills the moss and lichen right down to the roots. The dead growth then weathers off over the following 8 to 12 months.
How long does a roof treatment last in Auckland?
Auckland's warm, humid weather keeps lichen growing year-round, so most roofs need treating again every 2 to 3 years.
Why is my roof still green weeks after the treatment?
That's normal. The treatment kills the growth first, and the dead moss and lichen take months to break down and wash off in the rain. If you need the roof clean straight away for painting or a sale, you want a roof clean instead.

We protect the plants around the house and take care with overspray. If you're on tank water, tell us when you book so the downpipes to the tank can be disconnected first.
