Washing a grey timber deck along the grain, with native bush behind

Deck Washing

Grey and slippery to clean and ready for summer.

Quick answer

We wash timber and composite decks in Auckland and Wellington. A wash gets rid of the slippery algae, moss, grey weathered fibres and dirt, ready for oiling or just for summer. We use the right pressure for timber, because too much splinters the boards and leaves them furry. Quotes are free.

Decks go green and slippery in the shade, grey in the sun, and grubby everywhere else. By the end of winter a lot of them are a hazard to walk on.

A good wash brings the timber back and makes it safe again.

What we clean

  • timber decks, including pine, kwila and hardwoods
  • composite decking
  • steps, rails and balustrades
  • outdoor furniture on the deck

How we wash a deck

  1. Sweep and clear leaves and debris.
  2. Pre-treat green and mouldy areas.
  3. Wash with the right pressure for the timber, working along the grain.
  4. Rinse the deck and the area around it.

Ready for oil or stain

If you're oiling or staining, a clean is the first step. Oil won't soak into dirty, mouldy wood. Once we've washed it, give the deck time to dry properly before you start.

When to book

Spring is the most popular time, so it's ready for summer. Shady decks that grow algae are worth doing before winter too, to keep them safe underfoot.

Deck washing questions

Can you get my deck ready for oiling?

Yes. A clean deck lets the oil soak in properly. Leave it to dry fully before you oil. A couple of fine days is a good rule, and check the oil maker's instructions.

Will water blasting damage my deck?

It can if the pressure's too high or the nozzle's too close. That's what raises the grain and leaves the boards fuzzy. We use a lower pressure and work with the grain.

How often should a deck be washed?

Once a year for most decks, usually in spring. Shady decks that go green may need it more often.

How much does a deck wash cost?

It depends on the size, how dirty it is and whether there are steps and rails. Free quotes, and a photo helps.
