Remuera has some of Auckland's biggest and oldest family homes. There are 1920s and 30s bungalows and brick houses, some English-style homes with steep tiled roofs, and newer plaster and cedar homes on subdivided sections. Mature gardens, high hedges and big trees are part of the look, and they keep the houses shaded and damp.
Bigger homes, more to look after
Clay and concrete tile roofs. Older tiled roofs grow moss and lichen in the shade. Old clay tiles can be brittle, so walking on them carelessly causes breakages.
Plaster, brick and cedar. Plaster and painted surfaces get a soft wash at low pressure. Brick gets cleaned without blasting the mortar. Cedar and stained timber need a gentle touch, or the grain furs up and the finish goes patchy.
Gutters under big trees. Large homes have long gutter runs, often two storeys up and sitting under oaks, plane trees or natives. We clear them and check the downpipes.
Driveways, courtyards and pool areas. Long driveways, pavers, stone and pool surrounds get water blasted with the pressure matched to the surface. Exposed aggregate and natural stone don't get the same pressure as plain concrete.
Fences and decks. Timber fences and large decks facing the garden or Hobson Bay.
