Mt Eden has a mix of old villas, 1920s and 30s bungalows, brick-and-tile homes from the middle of last century, flats, and plenty of new apartments and townhouses. Many sections have the volcanic stone walls the area is known for, along with big old trees. The mountain makes a difference
Houses on the south and east sides of Maungawhau lose the sun early in winter. Shaded walls stay damp, and that's where mould and algae take hold. Add mature trees dropping leaves onto roofs and into gutters, and you've got the most common Mt Eden job list:
- Green and black growth on shaded weatherboards and the underside of eaves, which we soft wash at low pressure
- Moss on iron and tile roofs, either washed off or treated so it dies back over the following weeks
- Gutters full of leaves, which we clear by hand
- Slippery steps and paths, some of them scoria or basalt
Stone walls and paths
Volcanic stone walls are rough and porous, and they grow moss and lichen readily. Some are old and loosely laid, so heavy pressure can dislodge mortar or stones. We test a small area first and adjust the pressure to suit the wall. Concrete driveways and paths get a normal water blast.
Flats, units and rentals
Mt Eden has a lot of rentals and 1960s and 70s blocks of flats.

Can you clean a scoria wall without damaging it? Usually, yes. We start with low pressure on a test patch. If the wall is crumbly or the mortar is soft, we'll tell you and go gently or leave it.
Do you wash blocks of flats? Yes. We can quote for a whole block. Send us the number of units and the number of storeys.
