Clearing leaves out of a gutter from a ladder into a bucket

How Often Should You Clean Gutters in Auckland?

Most Auckland gutters need clearing twice a year. That's the short answer. The longer answer depends on what's growing around your place, what your roof is made of and how long it's been since anyone was up there.

We clear gutters right across the North Shore, West, Central, East and South Auckland and Manukau. Here's what we've learned about timing, the warning signs, and what it costs you to leave it too long.

Twice a year suits most Auckland homes

Our usual advice is spring and autumn. Autumn catches the leaf drop before the winter rain sets in. Spring clears out whatever winter washed off the roof: moss, bits of lichen, grit off old concrete tiles and the odd tennis ball.

Some houses need it more often. If you've got big trees hanging over the roof, a pōhutukawa out the front or a neighbour's liquidambar that drops everything in May, you might need a clean every three or four months. A house in a newer subdivision with no trees nearby can sometimes stretch to once a year.

The simple rule is this. If you can see signs of a blockage, don't wait for the calendar.

Why Auckland gutters fill up faster than you'd think

Auckland isn't short of rain, and the humidity is great for moss and lichen on the roof. Every heavy shower knocks a bit of that growth loose and it washes straight into the spouting. Mix it with leaves and you get a black sludge that sits in the bottom of the gutter and holds water.

Older concrete tile roofs shed a fine grit as they age. It settles in the gutter like sand. Long-run iron roofs shed less, but leaves still pile up in the corners and around the downpipe outlets.

Once an outlet is blocked, the whole run backs up. One clogged downpipe is often enough to send water over the front of the gutter in a decent downpour.

Signs your gutters need clearing now

You don't need to get on a ladder to spot most of these:

  • Water pouring over the edge of the gutter in rain instead of going down the downpipe
  • Grass, weeds or little seedlings growing out of the spouting
  • Dark stripes or tide marks on the fascia or the weatherboards underneath
  • Gutters sagging or pulling away from the fascia
  • A puddle or washed-out bit of garden in the same spot after every storm
  • Birds going in and out along the gutter line, which usually means a nest
  • Damp patches or mould on the ceiling near the eaves

If you see any of those, get it sorted before the next big rain.

What happens if you leave it

Blocked gutters rarely cause one big disaster. It's a slow run of small problems. Water spilling over the front soaks the fascia and the tops of the weatherboards, and over a few winters that timber can start to rot. Water that backs up the other way can get in behind the fascia and into the roof space.

Water dumped at the base of the wall softens the ground, undermines paths and keeps the subfloor damp. A damp subfloor means a damp house, and Auckland homes don't need any help with that.

The weight matters too. A gutter full of wet sludge is heavy. Brackets bend, joints split and you end up paying for spouting repairs instead of a clean.

What a gutter clean involves

When we're doing gutter cleaning in Auckland, we follow the same steps every time:

  1. Look over the gutters and roof edge to see what we're dealing with.
  2. Clear the gutters by hand and take the muck away.
  3. Check the downpipes and clear any blockages, taking them apart if we need to.
  4. Flush water through the system to make sure it runs freely.
  5. Tell you about anything we've noticed, like loose brackets, rusty joins or cracked tiles near the edge.

Most houses take us between one and three hours. It comes down to the size of the house, the number of storeys and how much is in there. You don't need to be home, as long as we can get to the gutters and downpipes. If you'd like before and after photos, just ask.

Can you do it yourself?

You can, if the house is single storey and you're comfortable on a ladder. Put the ladder on firm, level ground, have someone foot it and don't lean out past the rails. Scoop the muck into a bucket rather than flicking it onto the lawn. And skip the water blaster. It just sprays sludge all over your walls and windows.

Two-storey houses, steep roofs and sloping sections are a different story. A fall from second-storey height can end badly. That's when it makes sense to get someone in who does it every day.

Fix the cause, not just the gutter

If your gutters keep filling with moss, the real problem is on the roof. A roof clean in Auckland deals with the source, so the gutters stay clearer for longer. Plenty of our customers get the gutters done on the same day as a house wash, so the black streaks under the spouting get washed off at the same time.

Prices depend on the size of the house and how much needs to come out. You can see what's included on our gutter cleaning Auckland page, or call us on 027 303 8398 for a free quote. We're open seven days, 7am to 7pm.

Gutter questions we get asked

How often should gutters be cleaned in Auckland?

Twice a year for most homes, in spring and autumn. If trees overhang your roof, you may need it every three or four months.

How long does a gutter clean take?

Usually one to three hours. Bigger houses, two storeys and very full gutters take longer.

Do I need to be home?

No. We just need clear access to the gutters and downpipes. Leave the side gate open and let us know about any dogs.

Will cleaning damage my gutters or roof?

Not when it's done properly. We clear by hand and take care around tiles and brackets. Regular clearing actually helps your spouting last longer, because it isn't carrying the weight of wet muck all winter.
