We work right across Porirua and know it well.
Porirua's houses vary a lot from one side of the harbour to the other. Titahi Bay faces west and takes whatever the Tasman throws at it. The eastern suburbs, such as Cannons Creek, Waitangirua and Ascot Park, were mostly built in the 1960s and 70s on steep hillsides. Aotea and the newer streets above the city centre are much more recent. A one-size-fits-all wash doesn't work here.
Porirua weather and your house
Wind and rain are the big ones. Wind pushes rain and salt into every gap, and the hill suburbs hold damp on their shaded sides. You get green walls on the south side, black streaks under the spouting, and moss in the gutters and on the roof.
- Titahi Bay and the coast: salt film on windows and joinery. Rinsing it off regularly helps protect paint and aluminium.
- Hillside homes: shaded walls, slippery steps and paths, and plenty of moss. Concrete steps and paths need a water blast to make them safe again.
- Newer homes in Aotea: plaster and fibre-cement cladding that needs a soft wash, not high pressure. The cladding warranty usually requires regular washing too.
A note on fibrolite
Some Porirua homes from the 50s, 60s and 70s still have fibrolite (fibre-cement) cladding or soffits, and older sheets can contain asbestos. It should never be water blasted. We wash it with low pressure and a cleaning solution, and won't use a method that could damage the surface.
